(Music Video & New Song) Derek Simpson’s "FRiENDS" Is An Anthem of Youthful Camaraderie and Unbridled Indulgence - (6/26/19)
You have intense love relationships and some of those might be lasting, but a lot of them are kind of aberrations: they come and they go, but you still have your friends. - David Byrne
The latest entry into Derek Simpson’s sonic smorgasbord is a fun-loving ode to friendship. Blending hazy lo-fi hip-hop with bits of psychedelia and experimental pop, the track is subtle and texturally nuanced. As seen in the accompanying music video, by recruiting some of his closest (and mostly non-rapping) friends, “FRiENDS” takes on an innocent and casual charm - a sort of philosophical companion to The Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” or A Tribe Called Quest’s “Can I Kick It.”
From Derek: "A documentary of true camaraderie built through rampant young adult indulgence, "FRiENDS" is a love letter to the first support system I was introduced to outside of my hometown. I like to believe that at that age many of us are finding people we actually connect with for the first time, so we excitedly get together regularly and begin to build our tribes on the foundation of celebration. During the close of our time together in Allston, MA, a few of my buddies luckily jumped at the opportunity to take part in this musical mirror of our lifestyle. The reflection shows us something honest, sweaty, hilarious and sweet as we look back years later from three separate corners of the United States, together."
“FRiENDS” is out 6/26/19 on Trailing Twelve.

Derek Simpson is an American recording artist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. After gaining success with multiple free album releases on Soundcloud (under the pseudonym Planetarian) from 2013 to 2016, Derek moved from Boston to Long Beach to continue recording his own music and surround himself with other up-and-coming artists in need of songwriting help and production. Layering spacey guitar chords and electric piano lines with dense and introspective wordplay, Derek's music often explores the value of holding a positive perspective in the face of confusion or adversity. His respect for focus and hard work shows in his recordings, all of which are fully written, produced, composed, and mixed by himself.
Derek has produced music for Kevin Abstract, Dom McLennon, Rockie Fresh and more. His music has also been featured in Comedy Central's Workaholics.
