NYIKO releases his new single “Summer of Outrage” on June 17th via Trailing Twelve.
NYIKO, the Los Angeles–based singer, songwriter, and producer known for his sophisticated blend of synth-pop and post-punk, returns with “Summer of Outrage,” a towering indie rock anthem written in the emotional wreckage of 2020. Built on shimmering synths, glistening keys, soaring guitar lines, and driving ‘80s-inspired drums, the track channels the widescreen emotionality of Simple Minds, The Cure, and New Radicals while capturing a moment of collective psychological exhaustion.
Opening with a nearly minute-long instrumental introduction—fluttering horns weaving through crystalline guitars before the rhythm section crashes into the central hook—“Summer of Outrage” unfolds like an emotional time capsule of pandemic-era America. Speak-sung verses dissect performative politics, doomscrolling, protest culture, misinformation, and emotional burnout, while the chorus erupts into a communal chant of “summer of outrage” beneath NYIKO’s soaring croon.
“I wrote ‘Summer of Outrage’ in August 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, the George Floyd protests, mask mandates, and the constant anxiety of COVID,” NYIKO explains. “Everyone was isolated, glued to their phones, and social media felt like an endless cycle of outrage. It genuinely felt like we were living through a summer defined by anger, fear, and emotional exhaustion.”

The song captures that broader emotional atmosphere—the disorientation of nonstop information, the commodification of tragedy, and the loneliness embedded underneath public discourse. Lyrics like “We’re all siren sounds and the echoes ring out” and “Spread the news / Count the views / 30 seconds or less” reflect a culture suspended between genuine grief and algorithmic spectacle.
“At the same time, there was this deep loneliness underneath everything,” NYIKO adds. “I remember FaceTiming friends and realizing none of us knew when we’d see each other again. There was a real grief in that uncertainty.”
That emotional core comes into focus in the final verse, where the production drops away to piano and voice as NYIKO reflects on distance and time: “Wish I knew then / This wouldn’t last / So I’d take in every second I had.” The track then expands into a final, cathartic outro driven by a soaring, fading guitar solo.
Written by NYIKO and LG, “Summer of Outrage” was produced by NYIKO with additional production and mixing by Michael Matta, and mastered by Joe LaPorta at Sterling Sound. During lockdown, NYIKO began learning guitar online and used the song as an early breakthrough moment in self-recording and production, with original solo work by collaborator Niles Gregory still embedded in the final track.

“What’s strange — and honestly a little upsetting — is how relevant the lyrics still feel,” NYIKO says. “It feels like we never really left that state of outrage.”
Following his critically praised 2021 album Honesty, multiple EPs, and sync placements in Love, Victor, Apples Never Fall, and Saints Row, NYIKO continues to refine a cinematic, emotionally intelligent form of indie rock. Named a 2025 Artist to Watch by Galore, he remains a distinctive voice in modern alternative music.
“Summer of Outrage” is out June 17th, 2026 on digital formats via Trailing Twelve Records.
