Thavoron Embraces the Beauty of Disappearing on “Blurry tattoos” (Song + Video) — August 5, 2026

Following the release of the seductive, self-possessed "Attitude," Seattle artist, producer, and songwriter Thavoron returns with "Blurry tattoos" via Trailing Twelve Records. Blending industrial percussion, organic bass, stabbing synths, and lush choral vocal arrangements into an intimate alt-R&B framework, the track transforms heartbreak into something unexpectedly peaceful, finding grace not in being remembered, but in quietly fading into someone's past.

Written, performed, and produced by Thavoron, "Blurry tattoos" explores the slow erosion of love, identity, and self-worth through the central metaphor of an old tattoo that has gradually lost its sharpness. Once vivid and carefully maintained, it inevitably becomes another mark absorbed into the larger story of the body that carries it. Rather than resisting that transformation, the song finds acceptance within it, reframing disappearance as its own form of liberation.

"'Blurry tattoos' is a song I've always meant to write," says Thavoron. "Growing up, in the darkest pits of my depression, I found myself yearning to something akin to a water molecule - something without direct proclamation of emotion, sight, or sound, even though water is still so vital and lively There's something beautiful, inspiring, and tragic about relating to something inanimate. For me, it became my ex's old, faded, blurry tattoos."

She continues, "I began to see myself as one of those tattoos. Once I was fresh, new, and cared for, but after the excitement faded, so did the effort. The courtship disappeared. We would just smoke weed and watch television and I remember how sad I used to feel. I always felt like this couldn't be all there was. As he built a new life and new love, I slowly began to fade into the background to become just another story to tell on his body. More tattoos and I fade a little bit more. I'm always still there though, and I always will be. It genuinely feels so good to fade."

Clocking in at just under three minutes, "Blurry tattoos" unfolds with deceptive restraint before erupting thirty-seven seconds in, where delicate melancholy gives way to an industrial pulse that feels equally intimate and unsettling. Drawing inspiration from artists like FKA twigs and Kelela, Thavoron balances softness with propulsion, creating a sonic landscape that feels sensual, mysterious, and emotionally exposed. Ethereal vocal harmonies drift above hard-edged percussion while warm low-end and fractured synthesizers mirror the emotional contradictions at the heart of the song.

The accompanying music video, co-directed by Thavoron and Maddie Ludgate, expands the song's meditation on identity through imagery that blurs the line between public spectacle and private grief. Opening with fictional TMZ-style news coverage documenting Thavoron's every movement, the visual immediately introduces themes of surveillance, performance, and manufactured celebrity before transporting viewers into a ballet studio where Thavoron and a troupe of dancers rehearse wearing transparent motorcycle helmets. Throughout the piece, she circles and embraces a masked figure dressed in a black-and-white polka dot dress, their body almost completely covered in tattoos. The final scenes place Thavoron alone in an open field at night, illuminated only by the glow of automobile brake lights while wearing the same dress, quietly suggesting the line between observer and subject, memory and self, has dissolved.

The visual mirrors the song's emotional core, examining how people construct identity through both the stories they tell and the ones they leave behind. Together, the song and video become an exploration of surveillance, impermanence, intimacy, and the quiet resilience found after losing yourself.

Born in Everett, Washington to Cambodian immigrant parents, Thavoron has steadily built a singular artistic voice by writing, producing, and performing her work independently. Since the release of her critically praised album Ugly (2021) and her self-titled double album Thavoron (2024), she has earned recognition from KEXP, METAL Magazine, LADYGUNN, Grimy Goods, Ones To Watch, and The Luna Collective. With each release, she continues to expand the boundaries between alternative R&B, experimental pop, and performance art.

With "Blurry tattoos," Thavoron offers perhaps her most emotionally vulnerable work to date, transforming the pain of being forgotten into an act of quiet self-acceptance. Rather than asking to be remembered, she discovers beauty in becoming part of someone else's history. In doing so, reclaims herself.

Thavoron is a Cambodian-American and trans (she/her) artist based in Seattle, Washington. Layering angelic vocals and intimate lyricism over heart-breaking sonic progressions, Thavoron fuses together elements of dark R&B, ethereal folk, and raw indie rock.

Growing up as a Cambodian-American and not feeling represented in the music industry, Thavoron hopes to help pave the way for Southeast/Asian American and queer artists alike looking for a sense of creative community:
