Alesia Lani releases her new single and music video “I Don’t Mind,” available April 13th on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve Records.

Texas-based soul songstress Alesia Lani shares her genre-bending retro gem “I Don’t Mind” and accompanying music video set for digital release on April 13th through Los Angeles-based Trailing Twelve Records.

After releasing her dynamic With Love mixtape and follow-up singles “What You Know About It” and “IDFWU,” Lani returns with the powerful soul-funk hybrid of “I Don’t Mind.” Utilizing a confident rhythmic strut, syrupy bassline, and nimble guitar plucking, producer QB Smith creates a groove-laden atmosphere that conjures up images of Cadillac Coupe deVilles, bell bottoms, and all the various accouterments of the 1970s. The steady pace of the production sets the stage for the spotlight to shine on Lani’s gifted vocal performance. Lani takes special care to flex her dazzling vocal muscles, shapeshifting between raspy choral shouts, bouncy hip-hop flows, soulful vocal runs, and endearing spoken word.

The songwriting on “I Don’t Mind” is direct and conversational, exploring romantic flirtation [I see it in your eyes you've been waiting / Tryin’ to find the nerve, just say it] and the desire to move beyond small talk [I really don't do all that fake shit/ So let's go let's skip all the basics]. Lani shares the experience that spurred the writing of “I Don’t Mind” below.

The lyrics came so organically. When I heard that bassline it gripped my soul. I told my producer, Q, “I hope you didn't give this to anyone, cause this is all me”. The production is so funky, sassy, strong, yet has a smooth-ass groove you can ride to. I just followed the lead & rode the wave of the song.

After finishing the song at Studio 601 in Austin, TX, Lani decided to take the project to Los Angeles and fulfill her vision for the music video. Directed by Seven the Shooter, the music video follows Lani on and off set in various 1970s-inspired locations. Instead of solely focusing on the filmed performances, we get glimpses behind the scenes - the hair & make-up artists, lighting equipment, photographers, and crew members. The choice to highlight both the on-set and behind-the-camera action can be seen as a commentary on how we view entertainment versus reality.

“I Don’t Mind” blends seductive funk, flirtatious soul, and enthralling vocals to support a message of knowing one’s worth and seizing the moment. The accompanying music video provides appropriately retro imagery that serves to showcase Alesia Lani’s charismatic and dynamic performance.

“I Don’t Mind” is out April 13th, 2022 on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve.
