UK-Based Corserine Release World-Building Debut Album ‘Symmetry’ (6 May 2022)

Corserine, Symmetry LP

Corserine release their debut album Symmetry today, May 6th, on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve Records.

On May 6th, cross-continental synthwave collective Corserine will release their eagerly awaited debut album Symmetry via Los Angeles-based label Trailing Twelve Records. Combining the strengths of Scottish songwriters Caro Tyle and Gylen Boardman with California-based engineer Cam Perridge and a cast of international guest vocalists, Corserine’s debut deftly melds ‘80s sci-fi film aesthetics with palpable nostalgia from their coming of age in Scotland.

If it wasn’t apparent from the title of album opener “Typical Pop Hit From A 1986 John Hughes Movie,” there’s a fair bit of self-awareness in Corserine’s sound. Some might say the ‘80s pop revival has enjoyed a longer cultural lifecycle than the actual ‘80s themselves, but there’s still something to be said for revivalists that can locate a heartfelt pulse amidst synthesized ones. Thankfully, “Pop Hit” more than lives up to its droll title, introducing Tyle and Boardman’s encyclopedic knowledge of synthesizers and their ability to generate skyscraping emotions out of them.

As unified as they sound on Symmetry, Corserine’s core songwriting duo came together from disparate ends of central Scotland’s music scene. Before Corserine, Tyle was a guitarist for various punk bands in Scotland, while Boardman received classical training for cello and toyed with an interest in synthesizers. Joined by a love of retro-futuristic sci-fi movies, the duo stumbled on their songwriting direction for Corserine fairly effortlessly.

“In those films, there’s always a nightclub scene set in the not-too-distant futuristic dystopia,” Tyle claims. “We’re basically making the music playing in those scenes.”

Symmetry’s nine songs do wonders in evoking gauzy dancefloors and neon-soaked speedway rides, delivering instrumental highlights like the nu-disco breeze on “I’ll Give You More” and the 6/8 stomp of “Demon Seed.” The album finds its emotional edge through its guest vocalists, pulling Melbourne-based synthwave artist ELYXIR for a kitschy pop performance on “Telluride” and Dallas-based singer Leah Klein for a sultry, lounge-worthy tale of missed connections on “Ahsoka Tano.”

Even with its roots in cinema fantasy, Corserine aims to build a world all their own across their debut. With each single paired with a psychedelic animated visualizer, Symmetry is clearly a layered achievement for its songwriting duo, using images of dystopic clubs and smog-hazed skylines as initial touchpoints for their grand vision as Corserine.

Symmetry is out May 6th, 2022 on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve.

BIO

Corserine is an electronic music collective of childhood friends from California and central Scotland, formed in 2019. The project is a vehicle for the ideas of Caro Tyle (songwriting, production), Gylen Boardman (synthesizers), and Cam Perridge (engineer), with many of their songs featuring guest vocalists and musicians.

Growing up in Scotland in the 1980s, the members were all surrounded by a unique blend of musical genres and pop culture. With his mother and sister being classically trained pianists, Tyle first honed his skills as a guitarist in various rock and punk bands. In addition to having an encyclopedic knowledge of synthesizers, Boardman is classically trained in cello. The members cite various 1980’s science fiction films as both thematic and sonic inspiration - “in those films, there’s always a nightclub scene set in the not-too-distant futuristic dystopia. We’re basically making the music playing in those scenes.”

Corserine’s blend of dreamy pop textures, gritty electro, and muscular rhythms will please fans of Tycho, Com Truise, and Neon Indian.

Corserine released their debut album Symmetry on May 6th, 2022.
