LADY SLOTH release their debut single “Sugarloaf Mountain Road,” available August 5th on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve Records.

Los Angeles-based indie rockers LADY SLOTH share their debut single, the raw and energetic “Sugarloaf Mountain Road”, which is set for digital release on August 5th through Trailing Twelve Records. LADY SLOTH is the brainchild of Justina Shandler and Jon Lane, two vets of the underground who have both achieved mainstream success with other acts. After deciding to team up over a bottle of wine while on vacation in Cambria, CA, the duo are finally ready to share their first song together.

“Sugarloaf Mountain Road” sees the band taking a nostalgic look back at their youth, with Justina singing about the [“boys she didn’t date”] and wearing [a scarf on summer days], over a driving beat and crisp alt-rock guitars. A major motif of this track is honesty, and the gut-wrenching feeling of telling a lie to your parents over something that, in hindsight, was harmless. The duo go in depth on the thematic elements of the song below

We were both spirited rebel children who lied a lot to avoid punishment. ‘Sugarloaf Mountain Road’ is a story of many childhood lies and secrets we hid in order to be accepted and be ‘well behaved.’

The brutal honesty with which the two write is evocative of indie-darling turned superstar, Phoebe Bridgers, whom both members of LADY SLOTH cite as a musical inspiration. The delicate piano intro with Justina’s voice gracefully gliding overtop is reminiscent of their contemporaries, but with a refreshingly jaunty edge. LADY SLOTH sing about the joys of adolescence, without sacrificing the awkward energy ever-present in that stage of life.

“This song was meaningful because in our adult life, we’ve both put in a lot of work to live unapologetically but we acknowledge that lying as a child to your parents and others is an extremely common practice. We thought it would be fun to vulnerably address our childhood lies and hope that others might be able to relate.”

While the themes of “Sugarloaf Mountain Road” may seem heavy, the tune is perfectly pleasant, uplifted by breezy vocals, a danceable rhythm, and the sense that both members of LADY SLOTH are having as much fun singing as you are listening.

“Sugarloaf Mountain Road” is out August 5th, 2022 on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve.

BIO

LADY SLOTH is the indie rock project of Los Angeles based singer-songwriter, Justina Shandler, and percussionist/songwriter, Jon Lane.

Growing up on opposite sides of the country (Jon in California and Justina in Virginia) both were big players in their respective scenes. Jon's former band, Uprooted, landed multiple placements with Redbull, and Justina's solo project has a prominent feature on Hulu show Good Trouble as well as a handful of placements on Temptation Island, and one on the Amazon Prime series Forever Summer: Hamptons

Brought together by a shared love of indie phenoms, Phoebe Bridgers and Dawes, LADY SLOTH was born in a hotel room on vacation in Cambria, California. Jon said to  Justina,“Hey we should write a song together.” Several pages of scribbles and one bottle of wine later, their first song was born.

The band tactfully employs blaring guitars and driving rock rhythms to carry their charmingly confessional lyrics, creating a sound all their own.
