Grace Kay’s Debut Album is an Ode to the Divine Feminine
(30 June 2023)

Grace’s Gospel, Grace Kay

Grace Kay releases her debut album Grace’s Gospel, available June 30th on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve Records.

In celebration of the warm touch of summer, Los Angeles’ Grace Kay presents her triumphant debut full-length Grace’s Gospel in collaboration with indie-imprint Trailing Twelve Records. Casting swaying shades of singular art-pop and R&B, Grace’s Gospel is an earnest ode to sisterhood, role-models, and stepping out on your own, written across ten dazzling synth-laden compositions.

Born and raised in La Cańada Flintridge, CA, Grace spent her teenage years attending an all-girls high school where she was imbued with a keen desire to empower other women in her creative outlets. Her expression extended both to music and theatrical performance, where - in tandem with honing her skills as a songwriter - she pursued an acting degree from The University of Southern California, finding success as an actress and starring in a number of short films and mini-series. During this time, each piece of Grace’s artistry informed the other in cyclical fashion. Her work on-camera strengthened the narrative storytelling in Grace’s songwriting while her practice synthesizing her own life experiences through music resulted in more genuine on-camera performances.

Where her acting was meant for the enjoyment of audiences, Grace’s music remained largely private. Outside of occasionally lending her vocal talents to local metal bands, Grace patiently poured herself into her writing until each composition felt like a perfectly personal declaration. With the help of producer and longtime collaborator Austin Foley (creatively known as Jynjo), Grace actualized her work during the liminal moments of Covid-lockdown and slowly tested the waters releasing her music as singles to great acclaim. Outlets like KCRW, Metal Magazine, and Atwood Magazine championed Grace’s lush vocal textures and visual lyricism, likening her to kinsfolk within the pop-sphere, including MUNA, The Japanese House, and Caroline Polachek.

In its totality, Grace’s Gospel is as spiritual and personally linear as it is sonically three-dimensional. Each track honors a specific woman who has bestowed meaningful influence on Grace, weaving a rich tapestry depicting confidence inspired by a coalescence of divine feminine force.

Lilies,” the album’s introduction, quickly defines Grace’s intention in crafting her own version of a devotional body of work, both in its sermonic depiction of her mother’s guidance as well as it’s spacious layering of synthesizer pads and soft, heavenly percussive ricochets. Grace’s Gospel continues its reverence in autobiographical, chronological order, highlighting moments of strength and resilience in propulsive, punchy pop songs like “Go Off,” “Open,” and “Renaissance” while “Here,” “Overgrown,” and “CTLTNM” process Grace’s junctures of growth and vulnerability through softer, ethereal story telling. The ups and downs of Grace’s maturation culminate in the album’s final titular track, a conclusion dedicated to her niece captured in a vibrant music video, directed by Anjoum Agrama and filmed in San Clemente. Across a sun-kissed valley of flowers, Grace benevolently extends her hand to a cast confined within different societal frames, breaking them from the shackles of categorization and allowing them blossom toward a greener pasture of individuality. The final line of Grace’s Gospel echoes as a mantra; a personal testament of Grace’s belief in the power of womanhood: “We’re running to the same place. We’re growing at the same pace”

Grace’s Gospel, Grace Kay

After years of painstakingly sculpting each note and each lyric of her record to perfection, Grace Kay is finally putting her truth on full display and in full-form for the world to experience. For the casual listener, Grace’s Gospel will stand as a technicolor collection fit for both the dance floor and moments of solitude. Those with an open, and detailed ear will have an opportunity to better understand what drives Grace’s artistry, and perhaps will seize the chance to reflect on the innate feminine energy that exists within themselves.

BIO

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Grace Kay spent her teenage years attending an all-girls high school where she was imbued with a keen desire to empower other women. Bringing that passion into her music, Kay’s songwriting tends to center around the women in her life and the influences they’ve had on her.

After graduating from the University of Southern California with a degree in acting, Kay went on to star in various short films and mini-series, which, she explains, taught her the importance of story in songwriting.

Grace Kay’s sound consists of refined and punchy synth-pop production, syncopated rhythms, and lush vocal textures that will please fans of MUNA, The Japanese House, Imogen Heap, and Caroline Polachek.

Kay’s recent singles have received widespread fan support, garnering press coverage from Atwood Magazine, Sheesh, and Alfitude, official playlist features on Spotify’s Fresh Finds and Fresh Finds: Pop, and major sync placements on ABC’s A Million Little Things and CBS’s True Lies.

PRESS QUOTES

“Kay is already well on her way to conquering the electropop world with the upbeat syncopation of her previous singles “play” and “fool” (plus one hell of a slowed and contemplative take on ABBA’s “Dancing Queen”). With “Here,” she trades the playful tones and club-ready production for hazy, nostalgic soundscapes reminiscent of M83 at their deepest rearview-gazing.” - Anthony Kozlowski, Atwood Magazine

“Every element has a purpose. The song features minimalistic melodies, sublime vocals, and a memorable chorus. Captivating from the first second.” , “Grace continues to deliver good music. Go Off deserves 5 stars. Iconic piece of work.” - Lefuturewave

“If you know me then you know I love records influenced by the 80s. “Here” by Grace Kay is no exception. I love the production, the guitars, the synths, the melodies, the beautiful topic behind this song and Grace’s dreamy vocals. “Here” is brilliant and it is one of my favorite songs released this Fall.” - thread.
