JJ & The Mood’s “How Many Times” Video is Raw Danceable Catharsis - 10 August 2022

JJ & The Mood, “How Many Times”

Cincinnati & Los Angeles based duo JJ & The Mood release the music video for their debut song “How Many Times” via Trailing Twelve Records on August 10th.

JJ & The Mood is the alt-disco collaboration between Los Angeles-based multi-hyphenate cartoonist Jack Sjogren and Cincinnati-based songwriter & producer Joey Joesph. Bonded by a shared hometown and enthusiasm for big-sounding music, JJ & The Mood draw upon a relatable story of adolescence that morphs into a celebration of the present moment.

JJ & The Mood, as a duo, is connected at two points. Sjogren, known for his work as a cartoonist, author, and animator, has been lauded by Oprah's Book Club (Things I’d Do), Bustle, Real Simple, and celebrity astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. Growing up the son of two pastors, Sjogren is no stranger to sharing openly and honestly with complete strangers. “I don’t subscribe to any specific dogma anymore, but I still try to imbue radical love into everything I make,” says Sjogren. Joesph fka Joey Cook, known as one of the founding members of the late aughts indie-pop band Pomegranates, has been self-producing records via their home studio, The Eyebrow Palace, since 2014. Sjogren and Joesph originally met in Orlando, Florida but it wasn’t until years later, during an autumn 2019 session at The Eyebrow Palace, that they started laying the groundwork for what would become JJ & The Mood.

After releasing their debut song “How Many Times” back in February ‘21, the duo returns to premiere a music video as a companion piece. The video sees both Jack and Joey dancing wildly in their respective homes and neighborhoods. As the band tells it, the video plays with the theme of  “finding ways to enjoy a beautiful friendship even when physical distance is keeping you apart”. This idea is obviously relevant to the band’s experience (as they spend most of their time in different parts of the country) but it is also reminiscent of the early months of the pandemic when every relationship suddenly became ‘long distance’. Jack goes into detail on just how pertinent this video is to the thesis of the group below.

This video truly captures the spirit of JJ & the Mood— a raw, pure, fun collaboration with emotionality to back it up…that’s what JJ is all about: unashamedly tapping into the spirit of joy and sharing that with the world.

Since the release of “How Many Times” JJ & The Mood has seen great success as the track was featured on the legendary KCRW, as KCRW Today's Top Tune and continues to receive regular placements on their “Morning Becomes Electric” program. The band has also since played their first show as a duo, opening for Say She She at the famous LA Lodge Room.

The “How Many Times” music video is out August 10th via Trailing Twelve.
