LADY SLOTH release their new EP ‘Forest Behind The Fog’ available November 4th on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve Records.

Los Angeles-based indie rockers LADY SLOTH release their debut EP Forest Behind The Fog, set for digital release on November 4th through Trailing Twelve Records. LADY SLOTH is the brainchild of Justina Shandler and Jon Lane, two vets of the underground who have both achieved mainstream success with other acts. After a slew of singles, the duo is primed to unveil their debut EP Forest Behind The Fog.

With every song, the band’s aptitude for storytelling and emotionally raw songwriting has become increasingly clear. The nostalgic “Sugarloaf Mountain Road” is an ode to youth, which finds Justina wistfully singing about the lies she told as a child over crisp alt-rock guitars and a danceable beat. “Fences” focuses on the importance of setting boundaries in a relationship while “Head Game” serves as the emotional core of the EP, centering around Justina and Jon’s struggle with anxiety and the techniques they use to help cope. The de facto mission statement of the group is to make music that is equal parts confessional and catchy, and on no other song is that more apparent than the final track on the EP, “Freedom Bailey”. “Freedom Bailey” acts as an appropriate bookend to the EP as it offers an optimistic conclusion to the heavy themes preceding it.

“But she’s in too deep / To see the forest behind the fog”

In their own words, Justina and Jon described Forest Behind The Fog as a deep dive into “themes related to mental health on the bumpy road navigating life”. With this thematic throughline in mind, it makes sense that the conclusion of the EP would see our protagonists emerging from ‘fog’ as they are now able to see the forest for the trees, as it were.

“To us, the forest resembles the clarity and freedom of self-actualization. The fog resembles all the obstacles in the way... depression, anxiety, fear, and doubt. In this EP, we acknowledge and explore those obstacles on our way to the beautiful forest”

As impressive as LADY SLOTH’s lyrical ability is, their understanding of how to create lasting hooks is what sets them apart from their contemporaries. Throughout Forest Behind The Fog, LADY SLOTH dazzle with shimmering alt-rock guitars and danceable drum beats. Each song stands apart; although they are firmly planted in the indie rock genre, they don’t allow themselves to be confined by industry trends, instead opting to experiment with their sound.

The debut EP from LADY SLOTH is a reflection of the oftentimes confusing and messy journey toward mental health. Through an indie rock lens, the band is able to deconstruct the genre in a way heretofore unseen. Jon and Justina are no strangers to forging their own paths in a crowded scene, and with the release of Forest Behind The Fog, they continue to do so.

Forest Behind The Fog is out November 4th, 2022 on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve.

BIO

LADY SLOTH is the indie rock project of Los Angeles based singer-songwriter, Justina Shandler, and percussionist/songwriter, Jon Lane.

Growing up on opposite sides of the country (Jon in California and Justina in Virginia) both were big players in their respective scenes. Jon's former band, Uprooted, landed multiple placements with Redbull, and Justina's solo project has a prominent feature on Hulu show Good Trouble as well as a handful of placements on Temptation Island, and one on the Amazon Prime series Forever Summer: Hamptons

Brought together by a shared love of indie phenoms, Phoebe Bridgers and Dawes, LADY SLOTH was born in a hotel room on vacation in Cambria, California. Jon said to Justina, “Hey we should write a song together.” Several pages of scribbles and one bottle of wine later, their first song was born.

With coverage including Wonderland, Under The Radar, and Ones To Watch, LADY SLOTH tactfully employs blaring guitars and driving rock rhythms to carry their charmingly confessional lyrics, creating a sound all their own.
