Party of the Sun releases their cover of John Prine’s “Christmas In Prison”

On Christmas Day in New Hampshire, the peaks and surrounding foothills of Mount Monadnock are covered with snow. The temperature can plunge below zero and many families keep a close eye on their water pipers and heating bills. It’s a time of year when festive magic and real-life challenges co-exist.

Party of the Sun, whose latest EP Goldenwood was a sun-filled and beautifully psychedelic ode to the past, understands how to create timeless recordings. Singer/songwriter Ethan McBrien and producer/multi-instrumentalist Rory Hurley have always lived in New Hampshire, where each season holds distinct characteristics, and living among nature is more common than not. Their version of John Prine’s unconventional holiday tune feels genuine and intimate, as though sitting across from them on a silent holiday eve.

McBrien had this to share about the release:

“Paradise” (by John Prine) was one of the first songs my Dad and I could play and sing together and I’m sure we are not alone in that. This experience is far from unique and that’s what’s so cool. It’s fun to think about all the campfires and late-night hangs where friends are sitting around singing John Prine. His work and spirit have built shared space, an island of sorts, a place you go with friends and family to connect and remember. We miss him dearly and are grateful for all he gave.

“Christmas in Prison” is out November 13, 2020 on Trailing Twelve.
