Party of the Sun Widen the Frame on “Overcast” - 16 November 2022

Party of the Sun release Overcast available November 16th on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve Records.

Party of the Sun is a psychedelic folk band from New Hampshire, comprised of Ethan McBrien, Rory Hurley, and Garrett Cameron. Writing and recording in various nature-bound locations, such as a small New England sheep farm, the band has released four EPs and two full-length albums over the span of just a few years.

After devising a mystical system to write and release works on a monthly basis, Party of the Sun return for November’s release “Overcast”, which finds the band ruminating on the meaning of transformation, both personally and sonically. McBrien sets the stage by singing about “leaps of faith” and making decisions from which he can’t go back. “Overcast” sees the band metaphorically shedding their skin and emerging anew.

No matter what you didn’t do or say / it’s all you got now / just to widen the frame…

On “Overcast”, Party of the Sun dip their toes into Grateful Dead-esque experimentation, all while retaining their signature psych-folk sound. A gentle acoustic guitar sets a familiar rhythm while reverb soaked vocals and lead guitar wander the soundscape. About halfway through the track the song breaks down and a horn section takes center stage, filling the song with a whimsical charm. This unique arrangement mirrors the lyrical themes of transformation as the integration of these new sounds and textures widen the Party of the Sun ethos. The band discusses their songwriting process below.

“We work on “Overcast” as dragonflies swarm the late summer evening. The guidance is Balance and the trio transforms again. Excitement and ingenuity emerge - Garrett grabs the horn, Rory gets liquid on the guitar panned left. The piece is full, even more so than I first imagined years ago scratching it out in my parked car, on the mountain road”

“Overcast” continues Party of the Sun’s busy release schedule as they have dropped a new single every month since October 2021 with an average of 10,000 monthly listeners. They have also garnered 300k+ cross-platform streams with support from Under the Radar, Atwood, Glide, and For The Rabbits in that time.

“Overcast” is out November 16th, 2022 on Digital Formats via Trailing Twelve.
